LOVE

Standard

My first thought was to title this post “A Happy Surprise”, but after thinking about how to write about this happy surprise, I felt the word “Love” was a better fit. If you are new to “My Happy”, welcome! “My Happy” began as a simple scrapbook, in a sense, of the things in my life that add to, strengthen, or create my happiness. It is a way for me to focus on the positives giving me strength, clarity, and appreciation for every day experiences. As I began this journey, I was testing out the positive psychology practices that I had learned.  In doing so,  I wrote “That Makes Me Happy!” a children’s story.

“That Makes Me Happy!” was written and illustrated with love, for my children, and for children everywhere. A passion emerged from my life experiences to show children that we (adults) value happiness and that we love them, whether they are our own child, our neighbor, our friend’s children, our relative, our student, we care about them and want them to feel loved and happy.

This blog also gave me a doorway to the world. I could connect with people all over the world. I took a chance and reached out to Madame Corinne, a teacher in France.  There was no one to tell me it was right or my story was going to be well received. I only knew in my heart that this story could bring smiles and love. I trusted myself and knew that sharing “That Makes Me Happy!” is sharing my love, and my love is the best thing I can share, right?

Madame Corrine an open-minded, kind, wise teacher accepted my story and used it as a part of her happiness project she had planned for her elementary students. Madame Corinne shares my belief of the importance of teaching children about their ability to create their happiness. Please read about her happiness project here Madame Corinne’s Happiness Project.  Madame Corinne and I have continued to e-mail and share our life experiences and I look forward to learning more from our friendship.

The experience of sharing the story and knowing it was included in a happiness project has been such a gift to me and my family. Love certainly comes back to you and this experience truly came back to me through an amazing surprise from a special teacher and class! Madame Corinne’s class collected their beautiful drawings of happy thoughts they devoted time to during the school year. They created a book “101 Things That Make Us Happy” and sent it to me! I cannot describe in words the happiness I felt when I received the book in the mail. I was close to tears when I realized the children had sent me their original drawings and I saw their happy, loving words.

Madame Corinne and her class also felt happy to give such a treasure to me. I would say we all shared much happiness and love. The students made a difference sharing their own happy thoughts. What an amazing lesson for the students to learn.

Thank you, Madame Corinne and all the children for the most precious happiness book ever! I look forward to sharing it. You have all inspired me to keep sharing “That Makes Me Happy!” and creating my happiness because we all deserve to be happy and loved.

“My Happy” readers, I hope this story inspires you to create your happiness and look for opportunities to share your love. I would be happy to hear and share your stories, too. You may comment below or you can e-mail me at thatmakesmehappy@yahoo.com

Clothing with positive sayings are popping up everywhere. While buying these for my children, I had the opportunity to share with them why I like the sayings on these shirts. In this picture the red shirt has “Kind People Are My Kind Of People”. It is a great way to remind our children that kindness is something we value in our family. Not only to be kind to family, but to show kindness to everyone. I was happy to see one for me, too. “Inhale Exhale Love”! Exactly! I found these shirts at Target by the new clothing line “Cat & Jack”. The white “Peace & Love” shirt is from Walmart. I have also noticed shirts with positive messages at Children’s Place clothing store.

This is my favorite gift pick to write about this year. Our family enjoys shopping at antique stores in our area. My daughter discovered this gingerbread man a few weeks ago while looking for treasures in one of our favorite antique stores. She brought it over to me and asked if she could buy it for her Mimi as a Christmas present. I asked her why she thought her Mimi would like it. My daughter smiled and said “Mimi told me that when she was a little girl she loved to eat gingerbread man cookies.” How special for her to remember what her grandmother had shared with her and to know that this would be a special gift for her Mimi. I would love to hear how other families encourage their children to pick thoughtful gifts. 🙂

My twin little ones found this You Tube video and we just loved these little snow babies! It was easy to find the materials. We had so much fun making these and it will also be fun to give them away! We obviously made mistakes, got paint on ourselves, spilled rice, and laughed a lot! We still think our snow babies are adorable.

A great book for all ages! In fact my good friend, Lois gave this to me as a gift. It is fun to read, beautiful pictures, true happy facts that explain the latest scientific research! It is sure to bring a smile to anyone on your list. I have shared it with students, my own children, and Madame Corinne brought it into her happiness project. Madame Corinne’s Happiness Project

Happy holidays to all of you.

May you find peace, love, and kindness during this season.

“Cloud of Love” Gift of Love

Standard

Are you looking for a special gift for someone you love? “Cloud of Love” is something I did with my kids for birthday gifts in our family. I thought you might like the idea for the holidays. For those of you who might not know, Clouds are groups of words showing categories viewed on blogs, websites, and other social media. This “Cloud” though, is created of reasons why you love your special someone.

The title of the “Cloud” can include the person’s age. For example, 60 Reasons We Love Mimi.  I chose to use the person’s age to determine how many reasons are used. You can choose to do the same or another number that is meaningful to you.  List reasons using different sizes, colors, even fonts, if you are computer savvy or simply use paper with crayons, markers, or pens.

Once you have created your cloud, it could be framed or placed in the front of a photo album (They still make these, right?). You could also include pictures of the person with you or your children. I have given a partial example below. (There are not 60 reasons in the example. It gives you the idea, though.)  I also included it as a document link. I think you could use it as a template, please let me know if you try it. 🙂
